3     How did we get the name India? The name in Indian languages is Bharata after the emperor Bharata. ... Today it refers to the contemporary Republic of India located therein. The name is originally derived from the name of the river Sindhu (Indus River), located in modern day Pakistan, and has been in use in Greek since Herodotus (4th century BC).



4    Why India is named as Bharat?                         The name India is derived from the river Sindhu which flows in the north west of the country. The Greeks used to call us Indoi meaning the people of the Indus. BHARATetymology: The name Bharat is derived from the legendary king Bharat who was ancestor of kauravas and pandavas; son of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala.
